Elf warning for the Big Apple as Bridgend bids for new record

Fancy yourself as an elf?

Bridgend is hoping to top its own record for staging the world’s largest gathering of elves at the second town centre ‘Elf-steddfod’ on Saturday 10 December.

Last year New York’s previous record was smashed when 720 people gathered in Bridgend town centre dressed as elves.

New York has already admitted defeat this year, with Mayor Michael Bloomberg conceding in a recent letter: “It is unlikely that New York will have an opportunity to accept the challenge this year and we wish you continued success with your 2011 Elf-steddfod. Best wishes from the Big Apple.”

Now organisers want even more would-be little helpers – and big ones too – to join in the fun and set a new record of 1000 elves.

A red or green top is all that’s required to qualify as an elf as hats are provided free on the day thanks to Bridgend Town Council. Elves need to be in place for the Adare Street count by 2pm but there will be entertainment and music from Bridge FM both before and after the record attempt.

The best dress elf will win a £50 town centre voucher.

Bridgend County Borough Council has helped organise the event. BCBC Deputy Leader Councillor David Sage said: “Last year’s event was a fantastic family occasion and all those extra visitors was great for boosting festive trade.

“As well as having the chance to become a record-breaker it’s also supporting local business which can only be a good thing.

“New York has clearly realised that the Big Apple is no match for Bridgend!”
