The Taff Trail and Merthyr Viaduct

The Taff Trail is a 58 mile long cycle path that links both Cardiff and Brecon in South Wales. A great way to explore the best of the south Wales countryside with its varied rural and suburban landscapes, and still enjoy what our capital city and arguably one of our most famous market towns has to offer. Cycling or walking the Taff Trail even takes you through Merthyr Tydfil and one of the finest examples of a viaduct in Wales. The Cefn Coed Viaduct is 115 feet high in places and at 725ft long is the third longest viaduct in Wales.

“The hoards head for Snowdon, the wise come here…”

Penmachno, North Wales. This place reminds me very much of the Garw Valley and like the Garw Valley, its certainly off the beaten track. Very close to Snowdonia, and not too far from Betws Y Coed, the hills around Penmachno offer some great walks, climbs and mountain bike routes. There’s a really nice place to stay called the Lodge, that’s a kind of upmarket and very stylish bunkhouse, hardly surprising as the owner is a talented interior designer. Penmachno is one of Wales’ little secrets, the hoards head off to Snowdon, the wise come here!

Bryngarw Country Park and the Garw Valley
7 06 2010Sculpture #2, originally uploaded by e_cathedra.
Jjust off the M4 near Bridgend, well worth a day out. Interesting sculptures, mature woodland, trails, events throughout the year and the gateway to the Garw Valley, certainly off the beaten track country. From Bryngarw Country Park you can cycle the Valley on a family cycle route that takes in the best of this little heard of yet stunning valley. Head towards Llangeinor and its historic settlement on the hill, overlooking the places that inspired the Welsh hymn Calon Lan, known to all Welsh people the world over! There is even a parc dedicated to the hymn at the top of the Valley in Blaengarw called Parc Calon Lan. Bryngarw Country Park surrounds the Bryngarw Country House which is great place to stay in this part of the world too!

The largest cycling event in Wales
28 05 2010The Dragon Ride is the largest cycling event in Wales and the largest of its kind in the UK. The event is based on a format that has become very popular in France and Italy during the nineties, essentially a road cycling marathon held over a mountainous route. The first Dragon Ride was held in 2004 and was based at the Recreation Centre in Bridgend. One of only three events of its kind in the UK, the inaugural ride had an entry of 280 riders. A challenging route of just over 100 miles took the hardy entrants over the most challenging climbs in South Wales, The Bwlch, Rhigos and Brecon Beacons. The ride has grown in popularity dramatically each year with the 2010 event sold 3000 places in just ten days and a further 300 entries were filled within seven minutes of their release, unprecedented within UK cycling. Entries to the event are now closed with 3500 riders entered.
